Making Halloween fun with food allergies

I seriously love Halloween, but I want it to be all treats (no tricks) for my youngest with peanut, dairy & egg allergies. If you’re also managing kid food allergies, here are some ideas for you.

The best things we did was getting a Halloween treasure box and Halloween rubber ducks from Oriental Trading Company. That helped with other Trick or Treaters with food restrictions too.

It also became the basis for our Switch Witch to teach our then-toddler about why he needed to trade in his candy. The ducks were incentive to hand over his bag from trick or treating. He’s gotten pretty good about this, because he doesn’t want to get sick again.

This year, I’ll also be talking to a few neighbors about planting some stickers or safe treats for our little guy, with them. That way he has things he can eat and play with on Halloween night.

While we have Teal Pumpkin Project decorations for our house, we’re the only place in a half mile radius with them. That’s too far for walking, hence the need to plant treats (if time allows).

Last idea: Enjoy Life recently released snack size safe candy bars. The price is a bit high so we’ll be handing out regular chocolates (in a different bowl). Save these for the kids who need it, like our son.

That said – our guy is a chocolate lover – so I can be found microwaving Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips pretty regularly, to pour them into chocolate molds. I made the ghost and pumpkin chocolates these way. The chocolate molds & storage stuff can be found at AC Moore. Be sure to use safe chocolates!

Have a happy Halloween!
